Electrical Technician (Solar) – HELPR-1

+ Based onboard HELPR-1 (home port Port Vila).
+ Starting salary of 149,000VUV per month.
+ Vanuatu based – no Fly In/Fly Out options.

Background

As one of two solar technicians working on the HELPR-1 ship in Vanuatu, your role will involve providing solar system troubleshooting and repair services in remote villages. You will be part of a team consisting of two solar technicians, a data officer, and a Project Operations Manager, working closely with the Department of Energy and various partners.

Reports to the HELPR-1 Director of Operations.

Responsibilities

  1. Solar System Troubleshooting and Repair: Perform varying corrective, preventive, and emergency maintenance for solar PV and battery systems. You will be responsible for identifying and resolving issues with solar systems on remote islands in Vanuatu. This includes diagnosing problems, conducting repairs, and ensuring that the systems are functioning optimally.
  2. Service/Repair Reports must be completed following all works.
  3. Apply root cause analysis techniques on faults.
  4. Work remotely from a maritime vessel to the Provinces (rotations according to ship’s schedule).
  5. Equipment and Consumables Management: You will be required to record all equipment and consumables used at each site daily. This inventory management will help ensure efficient use of resources.

Provision of Tools and Safety Equipment

  • Tools will be supplied, and safety equipment must be used.
  • Support on HELPR-1: As requested by the Operations Coordinator, you may be asked to assist with tasks on the HELPR-1 vessel. This flexibility is important to ensure the smooth operation of the overall project.

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate for this role should possess the following qualifications:

  • EEIM40117 – certificate IV in electrical engineering (installation and maintenance).
  • Electrical qualification from some other recognised school.
  • Valid driver’s license.

Preferred Experience

  • 3 years minimum.
  • Diesel Generator and UPS battery experience.
  • Solar-PV Systems experience.
  • Installing Electrical Fixtures.
  • Ability to train and manage junior electricians.
  • Off-Grid solar certification (SEIAPI).

Salary

149,000VUV + 4% VNPF per month, increasing to 155,400VUV on completion of probation.

Start date

April 22nd 2025.

You will be provided with food and comfortable lodgings onboard HELPR-1. All persons on board HELPR-1 must abide by the Respond Global’s Code of Conduct, including a zero-tolerance ban on alcohol, kava and drugs.
