Plastic Film

STEP 1

  • Ensure burn has been cooled for 20 minutes (if burn less than 3hrs old).
  • Clean the burn with clean water and remove any debris.
  • Assess TBSA. Gain consent and take photos.

STEP 2

  • Apply the plastic film longitudinally or like a sandwich. DO NOT wrap circumferentially as this can constrict and cause a torniquet effect.

STEP 3

  • Loosely wrap bandages to provide additional support to plastic film if transporting patient . Ensure patient is covered to maintain warmth.

NOTE

Burns under plastic film must be reassessed within 6 hours and have a definitive dressing applied if possible. If this is not possible during a mass casualty event, remove initial plastic wrap, clean burns, and reapply within 6 hours of initial application.
